Background
My path to becoming a psychologist, while indirect, helped to shape guiding principles within my practice: that context and perspective are critical. My path included growing up in a military family (as a military “brat”), attending high school in Washington, D.C., studying fine art and Women’s Studies, studying abroad, working with survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence, and finally returning to graduate school for psychology. Since then, I have engaged in numerous roles as a therapist, researcher, educator, and consultant. I have worked at multiple university counseling centers, a community focused mental health center, a trauma-focused mental health facility, and in private practice. Throughout this process I have also maintained my commitments to working with diverse communities and ongoing learning.
I recently decided to relocate to Albuquerque, NM after falling in love with the area during previous travels. I am enjoying exploring the rich culture and amazing landscape of my new home.
Focus and Approach
I was trained to work with a wide variety of concerns and people, but have also specialized in the needs of women, gender-diverse individuals, and trauma survivors throughout my career. These concerns frequently intersect with other concerns, such as anxiety, worry, depression, life transitions, and societal expectations about gender and cultural norms. My treatment approach combines Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with multicultural awareness and feminist principles. This approach is integrative, culturally sensitive, gender equitable, and trauma informed.
My interest in working with women and with trauma survivors began as an undergraduate while studying Women’s Studies. Since then, I worked as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault (SA) and intimate partner violence (IPV), completed my masters and doctorate degrees, and conducted research on SA and IPV. Prior to working in private practice, I was also a trauma specialist at The Ohio State University’s Counseling and Consultation Service where I provided individual and group therapy to university students who experienced trauma including sexual violence, assault, and harassment.
